I regret my baby's 'skanky' name and feel ashamed when I say it out loud

Picking a name for your baby is a big decision.

For many new parents, carrying on family name traditions matters most. To others, they want to make sure their baby has a name that is more unique, one they don't have to share with half their class when they are old enough to start school.

However, what about when you pick the wrong name – and only realise once you have told everyone?

One UK-based mum recently took to mumsnet to reveal she deeply regrets the "nature" name she chose for her baby.

"I regret the name we chose for our daughter and I don't know what to do…" she wrote.

"I've got it into my head that it's too much of a try-hard name (this was obviously not our intention!) and a bit skanky!"

In fact, the mum, who calls herself 'Kathy' on the parenting forum, says she is so grossed out by her little girl's name that she can't even begin to put it in writing.

"I won't say what the name is as I know some people won't like it and will make me feel even worse about it. It's an unusual 'nature name' and mostly used for a boy I think... that probably gives it away."

Kathy says the only person she has told is her partner – who thinks she has 'lost her mind.'

"I just don't know what to do.

It was my partner's first choice and it was also on my name - list but I just feel like it was a rushed decision when she arrived as we hadn't properly chosen, and people were pressuring us for a name, and now it's too late!" she shares.

"She's my absolute world and I can't help feeling like I've let her down."

Kathy also admitted that she said didn't know what to expect from commenters.

"Maybe reassurance that I'm not the only one who had a wobble about their name choice? I just needed to get it off my chest…Will it grow on me as time goes by?!"
